I am thankful for all your generalist rantings. Over the years you’ve given me hope in the church and I will always be grateful. As for me…I think I am still trying to figure it out. Right now I am enjoying learning and practicing various aspects of spiritual direction. I hope that I develop some level of expertise….we shall see. Still not sure if anyone will ever pay me for it. Ha!

Well, you're one of the people I might pay to just hang out with and shoot the breeze with (indeed, I paid for flights to Austria for my wife and I once to do just that). So, to pay to have you give me some direction spiritually (to invert the phrase), for sure!

Can't wait to hear how you hone in on this skill even more than you already have!

I might venture that we are all, perpetually, "still trying to figure life out" We may just be further divided into three groups: 1) those who know this and admit it (admirable transparency), those who know this, but won't admit it (often because of exterior pressures), and third, those who don't know this (a worrisome denial)

This one cracked me up. It is funny what kind of rabbit holes you can end up following.

One time I was listening to NPR and the Privacy Officer for the DC Metropolitan Police was talking about how they needed to redact police body cams whenever there is a FOIA (Freedom of Information Ask), but were having a hard time keeping up with the demand. This was in the early days of body cams. I thought, "Here is a problem, I can do that." So I went to the police dept, got her info and talked on the phone.

She said, "It looks like you make movies, how are you going to help?" I explained the technology and tools are the same, and that we could blur out the faces needed.

We actually started doing that for the police. In one of the videos, at one point a lady failed to yield to an emergency vehicle and was in an accident with that vehicle. Then she was strapped in an ambulance and to add insult to injury, she was given a ticket by the police for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.

She claimed the lights weren't on, and they said they were, so her lawyer wanted to see the body cams.

In the end, it ended up being mind-numbing work having to edit faces and license plates out frame by frame, but it makes for a good story about a random rabbit hole I once went down!

Wow this is an awesome story, Wes!.... what a crazy rabbit hole this was. I will now proceed to call your company "The Office of Redaction" or "The Ministry of Redaction" (1984 style)

Yes please! There were definitely moments where everyone including me and my employees started asking the question, "What is the purpose of my life?" after going into the vortex of redacting videos after several hours.

I find your writing witty and honest. Fresh.

My experience is to do a lot of things well, but I am not trying to be an artist. Play piano well to do Church and some soft music with my wife, but not trying to be Beethoven. so to speak.

I do lots of that.

Helps me connect with people from all walks and that's fun and Kingdom focused. So my expertise is to connect!

I like how you reinterpret these kinds of things as mere vehicles to CONNECT. I resonate with that. Perhaps in the end it's all about people, and our connection to them, regardless of the topics we discuss or the interests we have. People persist. People are eternal.
