They were deliberate in choosing a committee but quite willing to allow unwise choices in both committee and board members, all to keep certain people in power, including some who were openly against our doctrine or were (in a case or two/three) either belligerent or bullies. I think I left the church better than I found it but only by the grace of God.

Yes! As a pastor I hated the selection process and the meeting itself and it was years before I felt confident enough to change how they had always done it. This is so true.

yeah many places do nominating in such an afterthought way, it takes some effort to make it intentional

I totally agree but the one meeting more important might be the meeting where you nominate the Nominating Committee. Having the right people on this team is paramount.

hahah! of course, in most Roberts Rules led systems that is done in the Nominating Committee itself (some have it where you can't nominate the same committee members two years in a row, meaning: you can't nominate yourselves)
