Now, you might want to know the backstory here. Why do a podcast? I thought Dave was a writer? Good point. Well, in true writerly form, here’s some writing for DruGroup subscribers in addition to this podcast on why I started a one in the first place.

Four reasons I started the Not The Kind of Christian video podcast:

I want to introduce people to some of the great people I know.

One of the great blessings of my life is how many amazing people I have been able to meet and work with in a variety of ways. I had originally envisioned DruGroup as a place I might highlight and platform the writings of others. I’ve even asked many to contribute writings. The problem is that writing requires a very particular set of skills, a lot of time, and in many ways a calling to the art form. It’s a lot to ask people to write up a full article. But I’m finding a lot of people are ready and willing to talk about something they have a passion for on a podcast so this is really the key reason I started Not That Kind of Christian.

A podcast can be a great way help people redeem mundane activities.

I know that many people are too busy to read (as it requires the attention of their eyeballs) and by doing a podcast I can help people while communicating when they are driving, doing laundry, mowing the lawn, or whatever else they might double up doing while listening. I know I use podcasts for this purpose, and a good many audio Substacks as well. I figure I could help you do the same with some things I care about.

A lot of tough issues deserve a look that is more accessible to most Christians.

I love going in depth and stretching myself. But some of the toughest issues everyday Christians come across aren’t dealt with in a way that is accessible to them in a way that connects with each generation while being faithful to the core Christian beliefs. This is something I care about and I want to engage these issues with heart and humor, just like I try to do with my writings. I suspect doing this might help more people that want to make a little more sense of this crazy world, and walk away from it with a smidgeon more hope.

People are watching more and more video these days.

I wanted to specifically do a video podcast, not just an audio one, since so many are watching video these days, and I’ve never really harnessed the power of video in the past (I’ve often said I have a face made for radio, so that makes sense.) For the same reason I’ve decided to branch out to use some of the video-specific social media platforms that younger people are using, in order to connect with more video. We’ll see how that goes. I have an article half-written about my changes in social media over the years I’m still experimenting with the place it has in my life now that I’ve branched out to new platforms again.
